You've got the new job. Now comes the uncomfortable bit: resigning.
Even when you're excited about moving, telling a manager you've worked with for years can feel difficult.
Tell your manager personally
Where practical, have the conversation before sending an email or letter. Be clear and respectful.
You don't need a huge explanation. Something as simple as: “I've been offered another opportunity and after giving it a lot of thought, I've decided it's the right next step for me.” is enough.
Don't turn resignation into a complaints meeting
Even if you've been unhappy, think carefully before unloading every frustration you've ever had. Industries can be small. FMCG certainly can be. Leave professionally.
Expect a reaction
Your manager might be disappointed. They might be surprised. They might immediately offer you more money. Prepare yourself for that conversation before resigning.
Confirm it in writing
Follow your contract and formally confirm your resignation and intended final working date.
Work your notice professionally
You're still an employee. Do your job, hand over properly and leave your colleagues in the best possible position.
Don't burn bridges
People move companies. Managers become clients. Colleagues become hiring managers. The person sitting opposite you today could appear somewhere completely different five years from now. Careers are long.
