“Do you have any questions for us?”
The answer should almost always be yes.
But don't ask questions simply because you've read online that you should. Use the opportunity to work out whether you actually want the job.
Ask about success
“What would you want the successful person to have achieved after six months?” This gives you a much clearer picture of expectations.
Ask why the role exists
Is it growth? Replacement? Restructure? Promotion? The answer tells you a lot.
Ask about the team
Who will you work with? How is the department structured? What are their backgrounds?
Ask about the manager
Try: “How would you describe your management style?” Remember, you're interviewing your future boss too.
Ask about the challenges
Try: “What's the biggest challenge the person coming into this role will face?” A good employer should be comfortable giving you an honest answer.
Ask where the business is going
Particularly in FMCG, understand growth plans, customers, products, investment and strategic priorities.
And ask what happens next
There's nothing wrong with: “What are the next steps in the process?” It shows interest and gives you clarity.
The best interview questions aren't designed to make you sound intelligent. They're designed to help you make an intelligent career decision.
Use the interview to decide whether the opportunity is right for you too.
